I learned this at 6:40 this morning when I received a text on my phone, waking me up, thanks Wally !
Baby Dominic arrived at 5:30 this morning (inconvenient time), obviously inconveniencing people when they should be sleeping is something that seems to run in the family...
I've spent many hours this weekend, getting the better of the computer I was asked to look at. Whilst it's not a record breaker, it comes a close second to my brother's kids computer from about 5 years ago.
This one had 81 various "infections" on it, including 50+ trojans. The operating system had become unstable. When I finally made an internet connection, just on it's own, browser windows would open and provide "rich advertising content" and any attempt I made to engage the housecall antivirus online scan, would be blocked.
So far, I've spent about 13 hours on it and I've not finished yet, but I have got the better of it but as I've long said, children and computers don't mix. Kids are naturally impetuous and so to them, words like game, free and download now are irresistable temptations and the saddos who shroud trojans and other unpleasant buggies with them know this.
I highlighted half a dozen which were associated with programs attractive to kids (one called pups).
There's an awful lot of free software out there and most of it is pap. Then we have the software that claims to be free (even freeware) but isn't.
In the language of the less than honest, words like FREE DOWNLOAD abound and then in the case of yesterday when I needed a registry cleaner, one highlighted about 600 problems (it was making them up) and then wanted money to fix em all.
I did find a quite superb, totally free prog for cleaning the registry called Eusing which can be found here
It is easy to use and you can see from the way the program is laid out, the writers have thought of the "what ifs", for example, putting in a one click option to go to the previous version of the registry, should your PC become unstable (as messing about with the registry is not for beginners).
I used AVG version 8 free version a virus program which outshines anything you pay for. You can find it here
When you are doing a deep cleanse like I was, I also recommend Spyware Terminator, also a free program, but read through the install screens and untick the add ons like unecessary toolbars.
Find CC cleaner here. Again, it tries to reset your homepage to Google if you don't untick the relevant boxes as you go through the install. This program as part of it's routine, will clean out cookies, so if you regularly visit sites where there's a remember me option, having shredded the cookie, the site will probably say your face looks familiar, but you'll have to sign in manually.
Finally, the oft copied Spybot S&D. Careful if you are searching for this program. It has become a victim of its own success and has been imitated many times by those wanting to make a quick and dishonest buck on the back of a pioneer in spyware removal. Yes, do use it in addition to the likes of Spyware Terminator, as no one program can be 100% effective in its mission. S&D took over 5 hours on the machine I was working on yesterday, but on its second scan, it did so before Windows loaded and therefore shredded one of two trojans that reappeared on bootup.
These are programs I personally recommend, having also evaluated the shite. They do a good job and are straightforward (not necessarily easy) to use. If you are inexperienced or are Wally the Welder, don't play around with them even out of curiosity.
In his defense, the welder when having problems will ring me and say "I'm having problems with me modown, should I de rag me hard drive" ?
Of course, the best way to keep your computer running like a five bob watch, is simply don't let kids anywhere near it.
Won't be having any such calls from the welder today, as he'll be at the hospital photographing baby Domino, sorry Dominic. Look out for about 200 pictures on his Flickr stream.
