Ghostly sightings of the Tipton Slasher
The comment below, was posted over the weekend, in relation to an entry I did last autumn, when I visited the small park where the remains of WIlliam Perry, the Tipton Slasher are said top be buried.
Hi there, many years ago... 25 years ago!! I lived in The Fountain Inn with the previous land lady at that time June & Dave. I have many wonderful memories of living there one of which was the group sighting of William Perry( I think it was him) in the attic which was situated up a few steps and directly through a door leading to a rather large room. Being just 6 at that time and not fully appreciating what I saw, i am now more interested in finding out the history behind the room in which we saw this man. At that time I have vivid memories of a man seated in a chair wearing just boxing shorts, his hair jet black in colour with a middle parting and of course the handle bar moustache. If you have any information concerning other sightings or pictures I maybe interseted in, I would be grateful if you would let me know. :-)
Though I'm not a frequent visitor to this pub, I am not aware of these sightings and so, must now for curiosity's sake alone, do a little research on the subject. For those in the dark, William Perry was champion bare knuckle fighter of all England from 1850 to 1857.

Hi
I am currently researching a book on haunted pubs in the Black Country. I came across a sighting by Keith Povall of the 'Tipton Slasher', and was wondeing if Keith or anyone else had any info about hauntings/Tipton Slasher links to the Fountain Inn. The book is due for publication by Quercus in Autumn/Winter 2005.
Thanks.

I am also a Perry, and although I have never researched it, I have always been led to believe that William Perry was my great great grandfather. As I was told this well before the craze for geneology started, there is no reason to believe that it is untrue.

I am tracing my family tree and my grandfather tells me that we are related to the Tipton Slasher (possibly through marriage or marriage to one of his siblings). To clarify this does anyone know of a connection to the surname Haley?

I've recently started researching my family tree and am reliably informed that there is a link to William Perry - the Tipton Slasher from my great grandmothers side whose family name may have been Powell. I'd appreciate contact from anyone who can provide info on the Slashers bloodline. Also, is there any details of a pub (not the Fountain) that the Slasher owned and lost gambling it on the outcome of his fight with Tom Sayers in 1857. it may have been called the Fighting Cocks.

the tipton slasher is my 4th greatgrandad therefore my dads 3rd greatgrandad. My dad has been in the papers about him years ago we have all information on him with the fights he was in and the pubs he owned we even have a copy of his death certificate.Unfortunatly the death certificate does not actually state what his blood type is just what he died of when and where etc....we have a picture of william perry and also of his wife sarah. We have information on the fight with tom sayers but all it states is that the fight depended on alot of money doesnt actually sate the pub or anything if you would like to email it is lur2k2002@msn.com

Hi,
As previous posts I am looking into my family history.
My grandmother Minnie Hartley, nee Stokes moved to Yorkshire from Stoke in the early 1900's. Her mothers surname was Perry and I was told about her Uncle being William Perry.
If anyone on the site has a Perry- Stokes link I would be plased to hear from you.

My dad often told us about William Perry who was a barefist boxer. He is my great-great-granduncle. After many searches on the web I was recently delighted to find him! My branch of the Perry family were from the Rhondda Valley in Wales and the males were mainly miners. The family moved to London when my father (Cyril Howard Perry) was young. My dad was one of three Perry brothers. The oldest, also William, moved to St Albans. My father became a master baker in the Camberley area, and the other sadly died at the age of 21 in WW2. He was the rear gunner on a Lancaster aircraft and was never found. My mother gave birth to a boy on the day that my uncle (Eddie Perry went missing) Our family consist of a boy and three girls. My sisters are identical twins. We grew up in Camberley. I would like any information on the 'Slasher', including pictures, and would like any information about the Perry Clan!!!

We have recently been undertaking some family history research.
As part of this we came across a 1931 letter from an Aunt Blanche Le Meur (nee Wright) outlining family history. In that letter she noted that her mother was Mary Jane Russell (b1855 Tipton) and that her Grandmother (mother's side) was Emma Perry born 1817 Tipton, a sister to William Perry the prize fighter. Emma Perry married a Joseph Russell born Darlaston 1815. Joseph and Emma Russell resided at 105 Park Lane West Tipton from about 1871 to their deaths in the first half of 1891. They lived in West Hampton Rd Walsall in 1861. Joseph Russell was a Mine Services Charter Manager for the Earl Of Dudley mine.
Can anyone in assist in confirming the Emma Perry - William Perry brother sister link.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Robert

I too am a perry, and according to some research, my father malcolm perry did some years ago, our family too are related to the tipton slasher, as he is said to be my great (many) grandad. The intresting area with this is that, the connection lies with all men within my family, (up to and including my grandad) are named after one another, and are all named william perry. Another piece of information is that, William fought against a man called Ben Spilsbury, who is another decendant of mine. My father knows more details, as i have only briefly found this page and thought i should leave a comment. If anybody wants to know more info please email me at gem_perry2@hotmail.co.uk
